To: Real Estate Transfer Return Form Filers
The Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR), State and Local Finance Division would like to remind you of the upcoming enhancements to the real estate transfer return (RETR). DOR is moving RETR into My Tax Account (MTA) on
January 12, 2026.
How to Prepare
Current RETR system
It's time to finalize your current returns in the current system:
- Current system will be deactivated at 5:00 p.m. on January 8, 2026
- System will no longer be available to submit or record RETRs
- Conversion of returns to MTA
- Returns submitted November 10, 2025, or after, but not yet recorded, will be converted to MTA and will be available to record in MTA
- Returns submitted prior to November 10, 2025, and not recorded by January 8, 2026, will not be converted – they will not be available to record in MTA
MTA system
- January 12, 2026 – New system go-live date
- System is designed for user-friendly filing, and is safe and secure
- No registration, username or password necessary to file a return
- It guides you to complete the return accurately and correctly
- Fields autofill based on your selections (ex: conveyance document or transfer type)
- Ease of use – users can file, view, or amend a return
Communication is important
If you utilize third-party software for your filings, keep in touch with the provider on this upcoming change.
