The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, signed into law by President Obama on January 2, 2013, has made permanent changes to the federal estate tax, which results in the elimination of the Wisconsin estate tax.

A federal estate tax is imposed on estates of $5,000,000 or more (adjusted annually for inflation). The credit for state death taxes paid, which would have been the basis for Wisconsin's estate tax, has been eliminated.
