Wisconsin Department of Revenue

Extension of Time to E-File for Farmers and Fishers Until March 10, 2008

The federal Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that farmers and fishers who electronically file Form 1040 tax returns with Form 4136, Credit for Federal Tax Paid on Fuels, will have until March 10, 2008, to file returns and pay all tax due. Farmers and fishers who owe federal income tax are generally required to file 2007 Form 1040 returns and pay all taxes due by March 3, 2008. Because of changes to Form 4136 required by the Tax Technical Corrections Act of 2007, the IRS will not accept electronically filed returns that include Form 4136 until March 3.

This extension until March 10 does not affect farmers and fishers who are not attaching Form 4136 or who are filing paper returns.

Wisconsin will follow the federal extension. Farmers and fishers who have a federal extension of time to file until March 10, 2008, will also be allowed a Wisconsin extension of time to file until that date. Underpayment interest will not be charged if the return is filed and the tax paid by March 10, 2008. When completing Form 1, farmers and fishers who qualify for the extension should enter “03” in the Special Conditions box and “farmer/fisher ext.” on the line next to the box.
