MADISON – The Wisconsin Department of Revenue announces today it is the winner of the Federation of Tax Administrators' 2007 FTA Award for Outstanding Compliance Program. The department was sited for its progressive work on its Data Warehouse Application.
“We are very pleased to receive this award from the FTA. The award represents all the hard work Department of Revenue employees have dedicated to improved technology systems,” stated Revenue Secretary Roger M. Ervin. “This award also highlights the value of new technologies, supported by good management, that become effective assets for the state's taxpayers.”
The Department of Revenue won for its Data Warehouse Application, leveraging a pilot corporate data warehouse project across divisions and bureaus. More than 23 internal and external data sources are included in the warehouse. Business users are able to affect the direction and requirements of the system because the department built the entire system itself. A phased approach further allowed for some immediate functionality, followed by full functionality as the rollout is completed.
The data warehouse has allowed work to be performed faster and more efficiently. For instance, 242 hours of auditor time were saved when the warehouse was used to clean an external data file during a motor vehicle audit project. Overall, assessments based on audits selected by the data warehouse have reached $1.5 million, and another $19 million are in the assessment stage.
