Web-Based Filing
Taxpayers who have Internet access can prepare and electronically file both their federal and state tax returns at an approved private vendor web site. In choosing this method, you connect to a web site to prepare and transmit your returns using browser software.
These sites are approved by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Their software products have been tested to assess their reliability and value. However, DOR does not guarantee any aspect of the software, its features or performance. The private vendor software companies and web sites are not contractually associated with DOR. Neither DOR nor the IRS charges a fee for electronic filing of income tax returns. However, private vendor software companies may charge a fee for their products and services. These products vary in price and features.
Benefits include:
- Web-based filing offers speed, accuracy, and convenience.
- No new software is installed on the computer.
- Your return is stored at the web site, not on the computer.
- Web sites use the industry standard Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol to ensure the confidentiality of your tax and financial data.
- You receive confirmation that the IRS and DOR have received your tax returns.
- You may choose to direct deposit your refund, which is safer and faster than waiting for a paper check.
- DOR offers direct debit (electronic withdrawal from checking or savings accounts) to pay state income tax due or pay by credit card.
What you need to know:
- For more information on Internet security, pricing, features, technical support, and other aspects of web filing, visit the individual web sites.
- Your returns will be processed at a web site that is not operated by DOR. As a result, DOR has no control over the availability of that site. Please read the information on the web site carefully before you begin the filing process.
- Technical support for these sites must be obtained from the web site companies.
- The web site companies charge a fee ranging from approximately $10 to $50 to prepare and e-file your federal AND state returns. Some low income and military taxpayers may qualify for free preparation and filing.
- Amended returns are not accepted electronically by either the IRS or DOR.
- Keep your income statements (W-2, W-2G, and 1099-R forms) for your records. They may be requested by DOR at a later date.
- If your return includes homestead, farmland preservation, historic rehabilitation, development zone, technology zone, internet equipment, enterprise zone jobs, dairy manufacturing facility investment, and/or veterans and surviving spouses property tax credit, mail Form W-RA with required attachments to the appropriate address within 48 hours of receiving your acknowledgement.
