 Form W-2, 1099-R, 1099-MISC and W2-G Data File Transmission

Wisconsin employers required to transmit data to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) may transmit data in an electronic file over the Internet.

If you filed your WT-7 electronically and want to key in your W-2s and file them electronically please go to the Social Security Administration (SSA) website and follow the steps to enter your W-2s there and transmit the generated PDF file. Plus register by clicking on the Business Services Online link.

The following two options for available for electronically submitting your files.

Social Security Administration PDF EFW2 (text file)
Qualification: Are an employer that has a W-2 PDF file that was created at the SSA's website. To create a W-2 PDF file sign up and enter your W-2 information at www.ssa.gov/employer/. Then return and transfer that PDF file here.

Transfer Instructions:

  1. Know where the SSA generated PDF file is on your PC or Network.
  2. Click on the Ready To Transfer link below to begin the transfer process.
  3. In the drop down box, select "W2 PDF"
  4. Make sure that the radio button for "Is this a test file": is checked "No."
  5. On the "Select the File" line, click on the Browse button to locate the Form W-2 on your PC or Network.
  6. Then click Transfer to submit your file.
  7. We can only accept PDF files created at the SSA website. Do not send other document formats or other types of PDFs.

Qualification: Are an employer that is filing forms W-2 documents and have a file that is in the Social Security Administration (SSA) EFW2 format (formerly known as MMREF-1). Of if you have Form 1099-R, 1099-MISC and W2-G documents and wish to electronically transmit these to DOR using the IRS file format displayed in IRS publication 1220.

We will be checking the EFW2 files for basic format and data validity errors. If the file is missing certain data it will no longer be accepted.

Transfer Instructions:

  1. Know where the Form W-2 or 1099 file is on your PC or Network.
  2. Click on the Ready To Transfer link below to begin the transfer process.
  3. In the drop down box, select either "W2 Data, 1099R, 1099Misc Data or W2-G Data."
  4. Make sure that the radio button for "Is this a test file": is checked "No."
  5. On the "Select the File" line, click on the Browse button to locate the Form W-2 or 1099 file on your PC or Network.
  6. Then click Transfer to submit your file.
  7. Only files up to 50MB can be accepted. Files larger than 50MB should be zipped or divided into two or more files.
  8. If this is a resubmitted file due to an error in the original file transferred, make sure byte 29 of the “RA” record is a “1”.
