Taxpayers who have a personal computer, internet access, and a modem may purchase off-the-shelf, or download from a web site, tax preparation and electronic filing software.
- This software is available at computer stores, mail order houses, and wherever software is sold. In some cases, you may be able to download this software from an Internet site and pay with a credit card.
- The purchase price of the software typically includes preparation of the returns. Electronic filing of your returns may require that you pay an additional fee to the private vendor software company, typically by credit card at the time of filing. Some products include federal and state electronic filing in the initial purchase price.
