  1. What are the benefits of TeleFile?

    • It's free -- all you need is a touch-tone phone and a Personal Identification Number (PIN).
    • Quick and easy -- it takes about 10 minutes to file your return. Math is done for you to ensure error-free computations.
    • It's convenient -- file anytime 7 days a week, 24 hours a day (except on Sundays from 5:00 am – noon for regular maintenance).
    • Paperless -- there are no paper forms or W-2's to submit, unless we ask for them at a later date.

    • Acknowledgement -- TeleFile gives you a confirmation number confirming the Department received your tax return.
    • Owe money -- taxpayers can use TeleFile now and wait until April 15, 2008, to send a payment.

  2. Can I TeleFile if I did not receive a TeleFile booklet?

If you meet all the requirements listed above and want to use TeleFile but you did not receive a TeleFile booklet in the mail, contact the Department to obtain a personal identification number (PIN). Contact us by e-mail or call (608) 264-6886 in Madison or (414) 227-4959 in Milwaukee.

The following forms are available on our website:

  3. Can I TeleFile if my current address is different from last year?

Yes! If your address is not the same as the address printed on the front of the TeleFile booklet or if your current mailing address is not the same as address that was used on your last income tax filing, contact us by e-mail or call (608) 266-2772 in Madison or (414) 227-4959 in Milwaukee. You will need to provide your full name, social security number, old address, and new address.

If you contact us by e-mail, do not TeleFile your return until after you receive confirmation that the Department has changed your address. Filing before receiving the confirmation will cause any refund to be sent to your old address.

  4. Can someone else TeleFile for me?

If you are unable to use a touch-tone phone, you may have someone assist you in making the telephone call. Or you may have your tax preparer TeleFile your return.

  5. How does TeleFile work?

    1. Eligible taxpayers should receive a TeleFile booklet with a personal identification number (PIN) in the mail from the Department. See the qualifications section above and determine if you qualify to use Wisconsin TeleFile. If you did not receive a booklet in the mail and you think you qualify, contact us to receive a booklet.
    2. Gather all your income and wage statements (W-2 forms) from all employers for 2006 and other tax documents such as 1099 forms.
    3. Complete the TeleFile worksheet in the booklet.
    4. Call TeleFile from a touch-tone phone using one of the numbers listed below.

      • (608) 261-7777 ( Madison)
      • (414) 220-6000 ( Milwaukee)
      • (888) WIS-File (947-3453) - if outside of Madison or Milwaukee

    5. Answer questions using your worksheet as a guideline. Listen closely; each entry is repeated so you can make corrections.
    6. At the end of the call after hearing the penalties of perjury (a sworn statement), you will confirm that you wish to TeleFile. You may hang up any time before confirmation and the information will not be saved.
    7. Keep the worksheet and supporting documents, like your W-2 forms, for your records for at least four years.
    8. If you owe money, send your payment with the TeleFile Payment Voucher (Form TPV) to the address on the voucher no later than April 15, 2008.
    9. If you discover you made an error after using TeleFile, you must correct your return by filing a paper amended return, Wisconsin Form 1X. The amended return cannot be filed using TeleFile. It must be mailed to the address on the form.

  6. Where can I find a personal identification number?

The 4-digit TeleFile PIN is located on the front cover of the Wisconsin 1A, WIZ, and TeleFile Booklet where you will find the TeleFile worksheet. If you did not receive this booklet in the mail, contact the Department to obtain a personal identification number (PIN). Contact us by e-mail or call (608) 264-6886 in Madison or (414) 227-4959 in Milwaukee

  7. Can I use direct deposit?

You may choose to deposit your refund directly into your savings or checking account. Direct deposit is more secure because there is no check to get lost and it takes less time than waiting for a paper check. If you choose to have your refund directly deposited into your bank account, fill in the direct deposit information on line 17 of the TeleFile worksheet. Make sure the routing and account numbers are accurate. Incorrect numbers can cause your refund to be misdirected or delayed.

The routing number of your financial institution is nine digits and begins with 01 through 12 or 21 through 32. The account number can be up to 17 characters. Omit hyphens, spaces and special symbols. Enter the number from left to right.

  8. Where is my refund?

Refunds usually are mailed or directly deposited within 3-5 business days (refunds for return selected for review or that are adjusted will take longer). Before you contact us about your refund, allow up to ten additional business days for your check to be delivered.

You may check the status of your refund online or by calling one of our automated refund inquiry help lines. In Madison call (608) 266-8100, in Milwaukee call (414) 227-4907, outside of Madison or Milwaukee call (866) WIS-RFND (947-7363). You will need to provide your social security number and the amount of your refund.
