Find a Tax Preparer
Wisconsin participates in the federal/state electronic filing program, a cooperative effort between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the state revenue agencies. Authorized tax professionals electronically transmit federal and state income tax returns to the IRS. Then the IRS electronically sends the state return to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) for processing.
Taxpayers interested in e-filing through a tax professional
- Contact a tax professional that is authorized by the IRS and the State of Wisconsin to provide electronic filing services. These authorized tax professionals are called Electronic Return Originators (EROs). Make sure the tax professional you choose participates in the Federal/State Electronic Filing Program and uses a software package that includes the State of Wisconsin.
- Select the first letter of a city (Wisconsin only) from the alphabetical list below:
A B C D E F G H I J K L Ma-Mh Mi-Mz N O P R S T U V Wa Wb-Wz
What to expect when you electronically file your income tax return using a tax professional.
These are the steps in the e-file process:
- ERO enters data into software program and prepares the federal and Wisconsin returns.
- ERO and taxpayer confirm direct deposit information.
- ERO and taxpayer confirm direct debit information.
- ERO and taxpayer review and verify information on the returns.
- ERO provides taxpayer with a copy of the tax return.
- ERO transmits the returns.
- ERO receives acknowledgements and notifies taxpayer.
- ERO retains wage statements for 4 years.
- If returns include homestead or farmland preservation, net income tax paid to another state or veterans and surviving spouses property tax credit, ERO mails Form W-RA with attachments to appropriate address within 48 hours, after receiving Wisconsin acknowledgement.
Note:
- IRS acknowledgements are issued within 24 hours.
- Wisconsin Department of Revenue acknowledgements are issued within 72 hours.
- The reason for the difference is that the IRS works 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, and the DOR works Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
If you use a tax professional to e-file your return, filing taxes becomes virtually a paperless process, unless you owe taxes. If you owe taxes and are not paying by credit card, electronic funds transfer or direct debit, you will need to send the Wisconsin Department of Revenue a check with a payment voucher. Your ERO will give you a payment voucher that is generated by your ERO's tax preparation software.
